Himalayan glaciers are melting fast and may disappear within decades, affecting as many as 750 million people downstream who depend on the glacial melt for their water, according to a new UN report.
Rivers in the region such as the Ganga, the Indus and the Brahmaputra, as well as others criss-crossing northern India may soon become seasonal rivers - a development that has ramifications for poverty and the economies in the region, warns the report released by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
On the Indian subcontinent, the report said, people in the Himalaya and

The average glacier shrank 1.4 meters in 2006, compared to half a meter in 2005 and 0.3 meters in the eighties and the nineties.

It has been tracking the fate of glaciers for over a century.” The latest figures are part of what appears to be an accelerating trend with no apparent end in sight.” Millions if not billions of people depend directly or indirectly on these natural water storage facilities for drinking water, agriculture, industry and power generation during key parts of the year."
A two degree Celsius warming by the 2040s is likely to lead to sharply reduced summer flows in most rivers fed by glaciers, which will coincide with sharply rising demand for water.

There are several consequences of the global warming.
Big lakes - like Baikal, Aral, Manchar and Chad lakes - almost have been dried up.
Rivers like Colorado, Rio Grande, Chari, Logone, Jialing and Jangce are also affected.
People should stop carbon dioxide emission (and the countries which are most responsible for it are not willing to do so).
Hi,
Global warming is such a relevant issue that it is, to me, far more important than the other news flashes about the profits of Apple, etc on the right side of your blog.
Good to see individuals like you highlight the issue. At the individual level, let us do what we can...but really it is the governments and MNCs who need to wake up, and fast.
As for my chief-conductorship, it is ending today, so it is back to the grind.

"WHAT IS MEANING OF LEGEND?" Send Your Comment TO Us.
A legend (Latin, legend, "things to be read") is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history and to possess certain qualities that give the tale verisimilitude. Legend, for its active and passive participants, includes no happenings that are outside the realm of "possibility", defined by a highly flexible set of parameters, which may include miracles that are perceived as actually having happened, within the specific tradition of indoctrination where the legend arises, and within which it may be transformed over time, in order to keep it fresh and vital, and realistic.
